Our Theme Camp has two main layers: (1) Mystic Family Circus [the interactive
performance venue at 9 o'clock] and (2) The Sacred Love Womb Garden [the
camp's interior circus/healing arts pueblo.] The intent is for the two layers to
complement eachother energetically and physically, like a binary star. The
cloistered and tender healing area has a belly full of brash circus monkey
business. Meanwhile, the super circus freak playground has a burning heart of
healing.
The Outer Layer
The Site: Walking across the Playa toward 9 O'clock from the Man you approach
the Mystic Family Circus interactive performance/dance venue. The location of
the proposed camp is next to Illumination village at 9:00 and 9:15 where the
circus and Illumination Village can partner in a shared stage/arena/venue that
will be placed between the two camps' front yard, and thus be shared for
activities and resources including a generator. The venue will serve as the
primary performance venue for the Circus and its members and as the locatio!
n for large scale healing arts. This is the First Layer of the Circus world; the
evoked layer (the "art.". The arena is the sensory gem on a ring of healing. It is
the inviting frontispiece for the world inside.
Stage Design: The stage concept (designed by Rex Mundi, Scott Cannon, Les
Young, Sparky, and Carmenchu) is a multilayered, towered site with rigging for
aerial work, a ramped stage area, and an elevated operations booth. This
multi-use facility will consist of a network of scaffolding, staging, elevated
platforms, and towers. The platforms will be arranged in an oval measuring 60'
x 90'. An entrance underneath an elevated platform forms one end of the oval, a
large stage opposes. The stage will accommodate aerial work of all sorts from
zip lines to static trapeze, Spanish Web, and tissue. The sides are elevated
platforms measuring approximately 12' x 45'. Four towers are placed at each
transition point. A 16' x 20' riser resides in the center.
A large variety of usage concepts can be employed. When participants are at
ground level, the raised areas surrounding them can become a staging area.
When participants are on the elevated portions of the site, the ground level
becomes an arena style venue for choreographed action with the space
oriented to feature the open playa as a backdrop with the Burning Man as a
distant punctuation mark. Tumbling mats, seesaws, trampolines, and guided
events will encourage play on all of the staging areas.
Also, during the cooler hours of the day (before midday and/or around dusk), the
space can be used for larger scale yoga and tai chi practice. The purpose of
this facility is to explore as many of these usage concepts as possible. To
provide protection from storms, the entire arena will be wrapped in black dust
tarp and bedazzled with tiny lights. By day this creates a stark visual contrast to
the pale moonlike environment. By night the structure will give the illusion of a
window to deep space. Functionally, however, this wrap will also create a
built-in storage and changing area for performers without creating a separate
structure.
The Central Ritual Theatre Performance ~ Our Primary Artistic Creation: The
primary offering from the circus is a ninety-minute staged interactive ritual
theatre performance that relates to the Burning Man themes of games and the
attainment of wisdom. This participatory performance is a 3-staged act that
begins with a 1) an abstract yet familiar Creation Myth, 2) dives into the BANTU
Hero's Journey complete with tests and games, and 3) ends with the Book of
Time or Seed Ritual which can be likened to the Burning Man's objective of
"attaining wisdom;" the casting of a new species in the furnace of awareness.
This is a performance that showcases the journey of the earth, human kind, the
wise/fool, and! all things. The circus is excited to offer Burning Man a ritual
performance that is completely aligned with the themes and motifs chosen. We
are ready to help plant seeds of activation with the participants of Burning Man.
The central performance includes over 150 core performers (acrobats, fire
artists, singers, musicians, dancers, an orchestra, visuals creators, and lighting
crews). Most of the participants have performed at previous Burning Man events.
Wandering characters will also be utilized to surround the attendees with a full
sensory, magical experience.
We would like to hold this performance event on the Friday Night of Burning
Man.
Daily Activities in Outer Arena: Throughout the week, a range of other events will
be scheduled during the day and at night at the outer venue that tie in or
coincide with Burning Man events and themes including
Smaller Performances and acts from various collectives of the circus (see
Convergence List above)

· Circus Boot Camp Performances
· Music: Acoustic/Electric/Electronic, house, jungle, dub, space, etc.
· Spontaneous site-specific alchemy
